To keep in touch with the top 3 teams and that important double chance meant it was a must win game for the Pennant Hills Football Club against the Bulldogs on a sunny afternoon at Ern Holmes last Saturday. Two debutantes in Paddy McClaren and David Smith were the new faces in the team and congratulations to them for making the senior side.
From the opening bounce the Students came to play by stamping their authority on the game and by the 15 minute mark they kicked 4 unanswered goals, Penno came back in the second half of the quarter and managed to kick two goals to reduce the lead to 26 points and give the Pennant Hills team a glimmer of hope.
In the second quarter the Demons were completely out classed when they again dropped in concentration which allowed the Bulldogs to get away to a match winning lead after they piled on 7 goals to Penno's 4 straight kicks and basically turned out the lights on any thought of a Penno comeback.
The Bulldogs went into the long break with a comfortable 45 point lead and the Demons chances not looking good at all, however in the second half Penno showed a lot of fight and fought back strongly by out scoring the Students. Matt McCamey was solid as a rock in defence and on-baller Brant Jack who played his 100th senior game for the club put in a solid performance as did Jon "smooth" Moraitis.
With Kieran Wright going off the ground injured did not help Penno's cause however Ben Beaston relished the freedom up forward and chipped in to kick 4 goals which is his highest goal tally for the club since arriving here from Ballarat. Luke Turner has gone from strength to strength since making his senior debut only a few weeks ago and was wonderful again in defence and on the wing.
After the match coach Michael Cousens said it was only 15 minutes in the first quarter and 15 minutes in the second quarter that cost Penno the game and we won the second half against a quality team which gives us something to work on for the reast of the season. The students on the day were the better side and ran out comfortable winners 19.8.122 to 13.6.84. Next Saturday Pennant Hills hosts Sydney University at Ern Holmes which will be another must win game for the club. |
